On March 6, the Goya 2021 Awards gala will be held in Malaga. This year, due to the coronavirus, it will be held without an audience and with the nominees present virtually.
Have you ever wondered what path nominated short films take to become one? Well, in this post we are going to explain it to you in a very clear and simple way.
In order to submit your application, you must meet the following requirements:
The short film must have a maximum duration of 30 minutes.
You must have a certificate of Spanish nationality, issued within the dates mentioned in the rules (https://www.premiosgoya.com/bases/).
In the case of the Fiction and Documentary categories, there is a list of festivals (https://www.premiosgoya.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Listado-Festivales-35-PG.pdf) in which you must have participated in order to attend the Goya Awards. In the case of the Animation category, all short films can participate where animation represents a minimum of 75% of the duration of the film, without requiring participation in festivals at any time.
In the case of the Fiction and Documentary categories, the date of the certificate of nationality must be prior to the start of the festival where the award or selection that allows registration was obtained.
If you meet these requirements and want to submit your application, you must submit the registration form, along with a copy of the short film in HD digital support and other documentation at the headquarters of the Film Academy, before the deadline mentioned in the rules.
But what happens once you are registered?
From among all the short films presented, a shortlist of candidates is selected for each category: 15 fiction, 10 documentary and 10 animation. Then, the first phase of voting begins by the academics, who with their votes will select the nominees: 5 fiction, 4 documentary and 4 animation. In the second phase of voting, the Academics will select the winner of each category.
In both the first and second phases, it is very important to promote and send your short film to academics. The more academics who see it, the more likely they will vote for it. Long ago, in the age of analog, shipments were made physically, by postal mail. So imagine the number of copies in physical format that you should have of your film and the work involved in preparing everything and sending it. Now, there is the VEOMAC digital platform, which allows viewing of the works that are presented at the annual Academy Awards. Even so, you have to do a very good promotion and try to get the link of the short in VEOMAC to the largest possible number of academics, to publicize your work and thus increase the chances of being nominated and awarded.
